Bank Account Frozen After Crypto P2P in Pakistan: Why It Happens, What the Lahore High Court Said, and How to Prepare a Review Request
Accounts get frozen because money from a fraud victim passed through a P2P chain that ended at you. The Lahore High Court held on 30 July 2026 that P2P transactions alone are not fraud. Get the freeze reason in writing, hand over order IDs and receipts, and escalate to the Banking Mohtasib or a High Court writ if the bank or FIA stalls.

- Bottom line
You sold USDT, the buyer paid, the order closed cleanly. Ten days later your bank card stops working and the branch says "FIA". A completed order does not explain why the account was restricted. Here is how a fraud chain can affect a P2P seller and what information to gather for a review.

How an honest P2P trade ends in a frozen account
A scammer convinces a victim to send money for a fake investment, a job, or an online purchase. Instead of receiving the money directly, the scammer places a P2P order to buy USDT and gives the victim the merchant's bank details as the "payment account". The victim pays the merchant; the merchant, seeing a payment that matches the order, releases USDT to the scammer.
When the victim complains, the FIA or the bank traces the transfer to the merchant's account and freezes it. Every account that later received money from that account can be frozen too. That is why sellers, not buyers, are usually hit, and why users several steps away from the fraud get caught.
Users on Binance Square reported more than 11,000 Pakistani accounts frozen this way in 2026, with only around 15% restored. Those are community figures, not official statistics, but they match what lawyers handling these cases describe.
What the Lahore High Court decided on 30 July 2026
In a case where a complainant said he had transferred about PKR 686 million while buying roughly 270,000 USDT, the FIA charged three P2P counterparties. Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh confirmed their pre-arrest bail and held that merely transferring virtual assets, or receiving money in a bank account, does not by itself establish cheating, forgery or an offence under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act. The prosecution had shown no inducement, no misrepresentation and no manipulation of data.
The ruling is about criminal liability, not about bank freezes. A bank can still freeze on a compliance flag. What the judgment gives you is a citation when the FIA or a bank treats a P2P receipt as proof of wrongdoing.
Who can freeze your account, and on what basis
The bank itself, on an anti-money-laundering or suspicious-transaction flag. This is a compliance decision; the bank must tell you the reason if you ask in writing.
The FIA Cyber Crime Wing, on a complaint. Both the Lahore and Islamabad High Courts have held that the FIA cannot freeze accounts arbitrarily or keep them frozen indefinitely without a court's permission.
A court order, in a civil or criminal case. This is the hardest to lift and needs a lawyer.
Records and steps for requesting an account review
Ask for the reason in writing
Go to the branch and request a written statement of why the account is frozen and which authority ordered it. Verbal answers change; a letter does not.
Assemble your P2P evidence
For each order that touches the frozen funds: the order ID, the counterparty’s platform ID, screenshots of the order page, the bank or wallet receipt, and the chat log. Export them before the platform archives old orders.
Explain the transaction plainly
State that you sold a virtual asset on a peer-to-peer marketplace with escrow, received payment from the buyer, and had no contact with the complainant. Cite the Lahore High Court order of 30 July 2026. Do not hide that it was a crypto trade; a false explanation is worse than the trade.
Escalate if the bank stalls
If the bank froze on its own flag and does not respond within its published complaint window, file with the Banking Mohtasib. If the FIA ordered it, ask for the case number and request release of the unrelated balance.
File a writ petition when nothing moves
A writ in the High Court against an indefinite freeze without court sanction is the remedy the courts themselves have pointed to. This is the point where you need a lawyer; the earlier steps you can do alone.
Checks for fraud-chain risks
Sell to buyers with history. A buyer account with hundreds of completed orders and a long registration date is far less likely to be a fresh scam account.
Match names on both sides. Only accept payment from an account in the buyer's verified name. A third-party payer is the single strongest freeze signal.
Never share your bank details outside the order. Fraud victims are told to pay "the seller" directly; keeping communication in the order helps preserve a record, but escrow does not guarantee that incoming funds are legitimate.
Separate accounts. Keep clear records of P2P receipts and essential payments. Using a separate account does not guarantee that other accounts will be unaffected by an investigation.
Keep records for years, not weeks. Complaints surface months after the trade.
Is crypto legal in Pakistan right now?
Holding, buying, selling and transferring virtual assets is legal for individuals. The Virtual Assets Act 2026 passed the Senate on 27 February and the National Assembly on 3 March 2026. The State Bank of Pakistan withdrew its 2018 banking restriction on 15 April 2026, so banks may now serve licensed providers. Service providers must hold a PVARA licence or a No Objection Certificate (NOC); existing providers had until 5 September 2026 to apply.
Regulator: Pakistan Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (PVARA), a permanent federal body under the Virtual Assets Act 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Is P2P crypto trading illegal in Pakistan?
No. Individuals may hold and trade virtual assets, and the Lahore High Court held on 30 July 2026 that a P2P transaction and the related bank receipt are not, by themselves, fraud or an electronic crime.
Should I admit the money came from crypto?
Yes. Banks and the FIA can see the counterparty. A truthful explanation with order IDs supports a review request; it does not guarantee release. A false explanation can create further problems.
Will the bank close my account even if it releases the funds?
Some banks release the balance and then close the account as a de-risking measure. That is their policy, not a legal finding against you. Keep a second account open.
How long do freezes last?
From days, when a bank flag is cleared with documents, to months, when the FIA is involved and the complaint is still open. Courts have said indefinite freezes without sanction are not permitted.
Does having a lawyer make a difference?
For a bank compliance flag, usually not. For an FIA freeze or a court order, yes; and the writ petition stage requires one.
Quick checklist
- Get the freeze reason and ordering authority in writing.
- Export all order IDs, receipts and chats now.
- Give a truthful, plain account of the P2P trade and cite the 30 July 2026 LHC order.
- Escalate: bank complaint window, then Banking Mohtasib, then High Court writ.
- Going forward: check payer names and buyer history, and keep complete records. These checks do not remove all risk.

Bottom line
Start with the written reason, complete order evidence and a truthful explanation. Review procedures and outcomes depend on the authority and the facts of the case; documents and buyer checks cannot guarantee release or prevent every freeze.
