A familiar brand name or a screenshot of a licence is not enough to establish who operates a service. Before sharing identity documents or funds, make a record of the legal entity, the official source and the exact activity being offered.
Start from the regulator, not a message
The Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission provides a registered-operator directory and a separate FinTech operator page. Open the official site independently. Save the page URL and the date you checked it. A provider’s marketing page is a claim to verify, not a substitute for the official record.
Match the entity and the service
Write down the company’s legal name as shown in its terms. Compare the name, category and wording of any listed status with the service you intend to use. Do not treat participation in a programme, an approval in principle or a registration for one activity as permission for every advertised service. If the scope is unclear, seek clarification through the contact route on the official website.
Use a simple checking sheet
| Field | What to save |
|---|---|
| Entity | Legal name in the terms and the name in the official record |
| Source | Official URL, date checked and the exact status wording |
| Service | The activity covered and any stated limits or conditions |
| Website | The domain you independently verified, including its spelling |
| Open question | Any mismatch that still needs a documented answer |
Pause when details do not match
If you cannot match the entity, website or service scope, record the uncertainty rather than treating it as approval. Do not upload more identity documents merely because a social-media account asks you to finish verification. Contact the provider through an independently verified route and retain its response.
What this check cannot establish
An official listing does not settle every question about the suitability of a product, the safety of an individual transaction or your own tax obligations. This guide does not certify any named platform. Official status and service terms can change, so repeat the check before relying on an older record.
